Maurice Ohana’s Autodafé will be performed at the Opéra de Marseille on 25 November 2023.

Maurice Ohana, French composer, places amateur musical practice at the centre of his work. Autodafé, a work in 15 parts, has not been remounted since 1972. Musical and theatrical epic Autodafé combines in one hour and twenty minutes a kaleidoscope of musical ideas that borrow from medieval polyphony, Afro-Cuban rhythms, blues, electroacoustics, Andalusian cante jondo, opera, etc., in the service of a historical stained glass window denouncing the persecutions of the Inquisition during the Duvalier succession in Haiti (1971).

Autodafé requires a co-production of three choirs, an instrumental ensemble and a magnetic tape. Musicatreize / National Centre for Vocal Art and the Opéra municipal de Marseille are in charge of the production.
